The race
The preparation in the last week for the race included a interval session on track and a “Super-Sprint training” where I was the course setter and didn’t run but made some decisions on the table.
I started my race very calm and controlled. My preparations with the old map of the terrain made some route choice decisions a lot easier. I knew most of the crucial parts of the map nearly by heart. Still I took a bad routechoice on the 3rd control. The left option completely around the open area is about 60 meters shorter, has fewer corners and offers better runnability too. I lost about 20 seconds there.
On the route to the 8th control I nearly didn’t have to look at the map at all because I knew how to reach the church and I saw the flag already on my way to the 2nd control.
A stupid mistake happened to me on the 12th control. I didn’t see the small entrance on the street, ran further on, took the wrong path, recognized my mistake and did the next mistake by going all the way back instead of further on and twice turn to the right. I lost about 40 seconds there again. The final part of the course was easy and my time in the finish was 18:49.
It was very interesting to use my speedsensor in the sprint. In the end I ran about 5000m on the course.
In the finish I took the lead only for some minutes until Jan Zazgornik (finally the winner of the championship) arrived with a time of 17:42. Matthias Müller scored a time of 17:22 (fastest time) and had about 20 seconds of time loss on the 8th leg. The seconds place was taken by Felix Breitschädel (17:49) and the 3rd place was shared by Kerschi and Markus (17:55). I ended up on the 7th place of the Austrian runners a bit behind my goal. Without my mistakes I would have been in the fight for the medals which is something positive after the bad last weeks, on the other hand “would” isn’t worth a lot…
