Sunny and bright SpringCup

SpringCup Classic

After a long travel and a (too) short night I found myself in the competition area of the 2007 SpringCup. In opposite to the last year’s edition where runners also had to face snow in the forest the weather was really astonish this year.

My race was again one of the strange “not good but still not bad” performances. Already to the first control I had one minute mistake and another runner nearly caught me up. I continued my race with a bit more focus on the map and it worked well till I misread the map at the tenth control and thought that the little marsh was close to the little stream, but it wasn’t. I think that also the routechoice to the tenth control was a better and that simply going straight would have been smarter.
Through out the rest of the course it happened many times that my orienteering became too passive and that I suddenly realized that I wasn’t where I wanted to be. Also if this only were minor mistakes they happened pretty often and made my a bit angry about myself.
The fact that I ended up about 15 minutes or 25% behind the winner was very frustrating. I knew that my last three weeks were more influenced by some illness but still I’ve hoped for a better result.
Last year it was similar and then the relay result turned out to be much better (also due to the snow and the tracks) – I hoped for the same this year, except the snow.

SpringCup Relay

It was my task to finish the relay for Helsingin Suunnistajat’s second team. All of my team mates did solid runs on their legs and they sent me out ton the 37th position. My goal was to run my pace and keep some energy left for the final loop if there were any opponents close to me on that part of the course.
The first few legs were very solid and I could see Oystein Kvaal Osterbro passing by. He suddenly disappeared somewhere and my race started to be a lonesome one.
On my way to the eight control (37) I lost my direction after I crossed the big open marsh for the second time, didn’t realize the fenced area early enough and lost more than a minute on the leg, which was my biggest mistake.
On the short loop (13-16 / 64-44) I again saw one of my opponents but on the long leg I was again alone and it felt very much like a individual race with big start intervals. The situation changed on the next few controls as I got in contact with a runner from the GBR-junior squad. The shorter forking (47-91 instead of 64-65) and the better understanding of the situation around the third last control (53) made it possible for me to stay ahead of him even if my stress level shot up a bit again when I didn’t find the second last control immediately.
In the finish I was more than 10 minutes behind the fastest time but it was already much better than the day before. The placement of the team kept the same and I achieved the 34th time on the last leg - quite ok for that day.

The coming week will be mainly resting with a 5000m track test on Friday as the opening training of a week in Eger/HUN as first preparation for the WOC2009 in Miskolc.
