A look back and some thoughts about the future

Next Year

Changes are the challenge of the life. Actually a lot of things are changing here in the Austrian army camp for orienteering.

One of the things that affected me is the fact that I’m now working together with a different coach than before. So far I’ve been pleased and I really hope to get some big benefits out of a new way of training. Besides that I could also improve my “coaches’ corner” by another external coach for orienteering and mental matters - big hopes to benefit a lot.

The new season is already planned to a certain extend and also my race schedule has changed a bit as I’ll only run the most important competitions here in Austria and will try to focus on international competitions.

Last Year

Besides the future things I also made a look back on the last year as well. The season started very good with the training camp and the competitions in February in Portugal. Some could also say that it started very bad because the good shape in February was definitely too early and well, the whole season was somehow already history at that time. Even if I ran my personal best on 5000m in July I never felt as easy and fast like I felt during February any time this year any more.

Still I managed to do some good races (mainly from the orienteering point of view). The weekend of 15th and 16th April will be held in good memory for me. Both competitions (DM Sprint in Skane and AIF Medeldistans) were excellent orienteering and together with the test sprint in Arhus and in the Ukraine definitely the 4 best races of this year. To me it was interesting to see that I achieved my best races mainly on sprint courses and I also noticed that none of the race was a “more important” one…

It’s a pity that the international selections for the short distances like sprint & middle are a tough job. Most runners (all except one) are competing for these spots but it’s a simple task to gather one place, be faster than the others. Definitely something to aim at…

So far there is fairly any snow in Austria and my training is primary based on running and some other alternative things but hopefully there’ll be some snow here soon and the cross country season will kick off again.

A chance to win

I don’t want to forget to mention the lottery of the Austrian federation aiming to support the JWOC team of next year – or better said I don’t want to forget to say thank you to some of the big O-stars that were kind enough to by a lot from me.

The list is like a who’s who of the international orienteering family namely:

Martina Fritschi, Minna Kauppi, Simone Niggli-Luder, Thomas Bührer, Thierry Gueorgiou, Daniel Hubmann, Jarkko Huovilla, Kilian Imhof, Matthias Niggli and David Schneider
Special thanks to Emil Wingsted who provided one of his running shirts as a price for the lottery.

The drawing of lots has already happened so the winners are clear. The only lot that made a win was bought by Thierry Gueorgiou and I want to congratulate him winning a Swatch “Stade de Suisse” special edition watch!

The last thing I want to write about is the poll of World of O and Orienteering Today. As there is no Austrian runner to vote simply vote for the best! ;o)
