WUOC Sprint

Todays Sprint Distance offered a fast but tricky challenge. My race was good and I finished on the 23rd spot which is a bit of my goal to be among the 20 fastest runners. Fridays Middle Distance competition still gives me a chance to achieve that. Tomorrows Long Distance day will be a resting day for me and I’ll support the Austrian runners in charge as well as possible.

WUOC, WOC Sprint Spectator And The Last Months

It’s been quite a while since my last update and a lot of things have happened. My studies have proceeded very well and only little is left. It should be an easy winter term this year and somehow it even seems a little bit too early to leave the university…
On the sportive side there were some motivation problems in the winter besides the extra time I spent on my studies and I didn’t train that much. On the other hand I started to play tennis again winter and enjoyed some single and doulble matches in a regianl championship series during May and June. My motivation for orienteering got better in February and from May on I started a new cooperation with Günter Kaiser as my coach. My goals were clear, the WUOC in Estonia where I actually enjoy the side effects of the modern society (three persons in one room sitting in front of three laptops) and the Austrian Sprint Championships on the 13th of September. Running speed and motivation got better and better and today I’m really looking forward for tomorrows Sprint competition.
I made myself rare at orienteering competition this year and focused on the Sprint distance. The Alpe Adria Cup and the Thermenlandopen were the only competitions in Austria I took part. I was present at the WOC Sprint but only as a spectator.

Why?

I guess it’s not so clear to everybody why I’m relieved and happy after leaving a professional sports career behind me. Some years ago it wouldn’t be clear to me either. But it seem that things change within years, sometimes even within some (special) minutes.
It’s not easy to write these things because I don’t want to say “too much” but I also have to say something. Hopefully I get it right…

BTW:
I finally managed to put up the photos of the CISM.

Freedom!!!

"A vacation in a forreign land
Uncle Sam does the best he can
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Now you remember what the draftman said
Nothing to do all day but stay in bed
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Youll be the hero of the neighbourhood
Nobody knows that youve left for good
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Smiling faces as you wait to land
But once you get there no one gives a damn
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Hand grenades flying over your head
Missiles flying over your head
If you want to survive get out of bed
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Shots ring out in the dad of night
The sergant calls (stand up and fight)
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Youve got your orders better shoot on sight
Your fingers on the trigger
But it dont seem right
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Night is falling and you just cant see
Is this illusion or reality
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now
Youre in the army now
Oh, oh, youre in the army now

Oh, oh, youre in the army now"

... well not any more!!!

Austrian Middle & Team Championships

During the last weekend the Austrian Middle & Team Championships took place in Lienz in the south-western part of Austria. Both races were held on a new map which was said to be technically and physically very demanding. Especially the area where rockfall took place was one of the highlights of the weekend.
After a pretty ok race on Saturday I was running the team competition together with Bindi and Kerschi which was a nice ending of my season 2007.

A little later there should also be some “old” news from the CISM including photos of the legendary dancing class… check back soon.

Rumours, Holidays And A “Skyrocketing” Shape

While I’m watching the WOC passing me by closely I’m doing very well with my preparation for my season highlight, the CISM in the first week of September in Zagreb/CRO. The last weeks were packed with a lot of training and the training camp in Klagenfurt/Eberndorf last week was the peek week when just taking the pure hours into amount. This week will contain very intense trainings and then I get my “deserved” resting week.

Austrian Sprint Championship

Some weeks have past since my last post. Maybe I’ll still post articles about NOC and the Alpe Adria Cup in Plitwice but todays news are about the ÖSTM Sprint in Hallein/Salzburg that took place last Saturday.

My physical shape has become better (but not really stable) again and my goal was to be among the best 4-6 Austrian runners.

30.Mar.2007 - 30.Mar.2007

A little low – 5000m

Yesterday an early test race over 5000m on track took place. After some uncomfortable weeks I finally felt better again in the beginning of this week but as my training started getting more intense again the good feeling disappeared again.
Due to that my tactic on the test race was also not aggressive. The first kilometre was done in 3:15 but I already noticed that that wouldn’t be the right speed for the following 10 rounds. My speed suddenly dropped to 3:20 per kilometre and I finished in a time of 16:40. Very disappointing 16:40 – 49 seconds slower than my PB.
In winter the training was really excellent until the TC in Portugal. Since then somehow nothing worked out that well any more. Also the result at the SpringCup was disappointing. It’s really frustrating as I was really optimistic for this season – but still the season is not over. Together with my coach I decided to skip the TC in Hungary in order to free my mind a bit and give my some time to recover/rest from whatever. The blood test I had some days ago showed nothing special but still there must be something wrong as my shape (if it can be called shape at all) is getting worse instead of better...

Sunny and bright SpringCup

For the first time for a long time I was taking part in a sunny and pretty worm SpringCup competition weekend.
My performance, especially on Saturday in the individual competition on Saturday, was not that shiny.
After more than two weeks of limited training where I suffered from a cold (maybe even more than just a cold) my physical limit was quite low. Still it was interesting to compare to a big amount of good runners, even if some of the best were missing.

Portugal Once More

Hope you're not overloaded with Portugal news - here's my story:

From year to year it seems that an O-February in Portugal is becoming more and more common. For me this years stay was 16 days long and included trainings in Mira, the O-Meeting in San Pedro do Sul, trainings in Ovar and the final weekend in Nisa.
A lot of other national Teams were present in Portugal and especially the O-Meeting had lots of competitors (180 in H21E!!!).
Overall I did 18 O-Trainings or competitions and attacked more than 420 controls. Despite the fact that I’m still very hungry for more controls after this two hard weeks I also feel that the training camp was really a good one as my orienteering got better during the two weeks. Still there were some mistakes in most races so I’ll really keep on working on my schemes more in the next weeks till the season will finally really kick off in SpringCup for me.

O-Training week in Kiskunhalas

For the second time the Austrian Miliary Team made a first O-training week in Kiskunhalas this year. The week contained five O-trainings and some more running as well.

The highlights of the week were the KO-Sprint and the relay training on Thursday and Friday.

Also my second batch of training weeks has ended and now I’m enjoying an easy week before I head out to Portugal for a two week training camp with the National Team.

Four training weeks and one competition

Together with the year 2006 also my first batch of training weeks are over now. During all the weeks I felt good and besides the fact that there is still hardly any chance to do some cross country skiing everything worked very well so far.

I like the new style of the training I’m doing now.

The last training unit of the old year was a new year eves race in Hirtenberg. In fact it was the 43rd edition of the race there and I really enjoyed it a lot.

A look back and some thoughts about the future

There haven’t been any news from me since the end of the CISM in the beginning of November. Three easy training weeks and two weeks of training for the new season have already passed.

It was great to have some time to think about the (not so great) last season, to analyze and to start planning the new season. Some changes to my coaching team happened and some other things changed as well.

Besides that the lottery of the Austrian federation is over and some or better said one of the people that bought a lot from me even were able to win a prize. Check out who the winner is…

Brazil – Last Days, Maps & more

After a long travel of about 40 hours I’ve come home finally yesterday in the evening. It’s nice to be home again but on the other hand I’ve really enjoyed the last two weeks a lot.

I was not able to publish the maps so far so I do that now. I’ve also worked on the split analyzer that it now compares all the runners in the same order of running the loops even if their running order was different during the competition.

One thing is sure definitely – Brazil I’ll miss you!!!

Brazil Day 9 – Long Distance

Now also the Long Distance of this year CISM is history. The winners are Tatiana Ryabkina (again) and Daniel Hubmann.

I was happier with my race today but got the worse position. Overall the Austrian team could climb up some steps in the team ranking.

Tomorrow some runners including me will travel to the Iguacu waterfalls per plane and on Saturday the last competition, the relay, is taking place.

Brazil Day 6 to Day 8

Three more day have passed here in Faxinal de Ceo. The weather has been a lot hotter lately.

The Model Event was the first official Event and it already showed that the Brazilian organizers are really working hard. One example is the very well designed finish area which is also located on a wonderful place of this earth.

The Opening Ceremony offered nice exhibitions as well as very delicious food once again. And the model event made us clear that it won’t be as fast as expected.

Well and yes – the first competition is finished…

Brazil Day 0 to Day 5

Already about one week of my stay here in Brazil has passed.
After a long journey the time shift “tied” me to the bed but still I used most of the trainings that were offered.
The cultural day of the training camp offered a lot of sights but more important an unbelievable good lunch in a typical Brazilian grill restaurant. Yesterday, on Sunday, we travelled on to the event centre of the CISM.

Samba in Brazil

Tomorrow morning, early at 5:00 I’ll leave for the airport and a long travel to Curitiba in Brazil. This years CISM will take place in famous South American country.

The last week was again used for two physical tests, one 5000m test and another uphill running test. The results finally showed how I felt for the whole year. I cancelled the 5000m test after about 3200m and on the uphill test I was far down on the fastest times of Matthias and Kerschi. I somehow can’t say that I can’t wait for the competitions in Brazil…

Still I’m really looking forward to visit the country. And maybe it’s better for my performances if the expectations are far from high. You never know.

Austrian Night Championship

The night competitions are always something I'm really looking forward to.

After a not too successful national and international O-season this race was the last chance to win an individual gold medal.

I started well but then the night turned out to be darker than expected...

WCup Clermont Ferrand / FRA

Already the first training here in France offered very demanding orienteering. The extremely detailed volcano area is a big challenge for everybody here.

As there is internet access for all runners in the competitions centre (except right now when I write this) I try to keep the site up to date after every race.

Middle Qualification, Middle Final I, Sprint Final, Long Final, Middle Final II, Relay
